Genesis 50 February 19, 2018 ‚ÄčIt's day 50!  Our last day in the book of Genesis.  In this chapter, Jacob is buried in the land of Canaan and Joseph passes away.  But before Joseph passes away, he continues to abound in the love of God and in his faith in God. Joseph dies at 110 years old and he was 17 when his brothers betrayed him&n...
Genesis 49 February 18, 2018 Jacob's farewell words and blessing are given to his children in this chapter.  It is interesting to read about the characteristics of each of his children.  And that each one was uniquely different, each one had a role to play in the days ahead.  But collectively (along with Joseph's sons, Ephraim and Ma...
Genesis 48 February 17, 2018 Jacob has now dwelt with his family in Egypt some 17 years.  The time of famine which brought them there is now a distant memory.  Israel, once characterized by the sorrow and grief that consumed him, is now at the end of his life: content, at peace, full of hope for his family.  As the time to depar...
Genesis 47 February 16, 2018 We now come to a most curious part of Joseph's story in Egypt here in chapter 47.  If you'll recall, back in chapter 41, Joseph offered his advice to Pharaoh on how the coming prophecy of 7 plenteous years and 7 years of famine should be prepared for: a fifth of the harvest of grain should be set aside to provide f...
Genesis 46 February 15, 2018 In chapter 46, we see Jacob and his household- seventy souls in all- taking their journey from Canaan down into Egypt.  Along the way, they stop to offer sacrifices in a place called Beer-Sheba, which is the southern-most outpost of the land promised to Abraham and his descendants.  Beer-Sheba has gr...
Genesis 45 February 14, 2018 "Oh, Happy Day!"  Our praise team sings that old spiritual, recounting Jesus' wondrous gift of deliverance to each one of us.  And now, in chapter 45, Jacob and his family can sing their own song of praise: "Oh, Happy Day!"  What began as a quest for mere sustenance to persevere through a d...
Genesis 44 February 13, 2018 A little over three weeks ago, we read in chapter 22 how God commanded Abraham to take his only son Isaac and offer him as a burnt offering to the Lord.  Precisely at the critical moment, as Abraham's knife was descending upon his son, God sent an angel to stay his hand, and revealed a ram caught in the thicke...
Genesis 43 February 12, 2018 Today in chapter 43, we see Jacob's sons returning to Egypt for the second time to buy more grain in the midst of a severe famine throughout the Middle East.  In seeking provision at their father's instruction, they had previously encountered their long lost brother Joseph, whom they had sold into slavery years ago...
Genesis 41 February 10, 2018 Day 41 of our reading is in Genesis 41.  A monumental moment just took place in Joseph's life!  You can't help but be so happy to read about Joseph prospering.  It makes me think that if only we could see the end from the beginning, how much differently we would behave in the present.  Howe...
Genesis 42 February 11, 2018 I love the story of Jacob, and his relationship with God.  And I always love getting to this part of the story in Genesis which recounts the journey his sons undertake to Egypt in search of food, and being forced to confront their long lost brother Joseph.  It makes for such compelling reading, that ...
Genesis 40 February 9, 2018 Day 40 of our reading is in Genesis 40. Joseph's entire life's story is all about dreams. There is no doubt that Joseph heard from God through dreams and that he had a gift to understand them. We know it was a gift from God because, in verse 8, Joseph says, "...all interpretations belong to God." All gifts, no matte...
Genesis 39 February 8, 2018 Today our reading is in Genesis 39. It details the positions granted to Joseph while in the house of Potiphar, and then his time in the prisons of Egypt. Joseph was so favored by the Lord that everything he put his hand to was blessed. Both overseers trusted Joseph so much, that they literally gave no thought to their re...
Genesis 38 February 7, 2018 Day 38 of our reading is in Genesis 38.   This is a pretty messy bunch of circumstances. Jacob had made it clear that his family was not supposed to get involved with the Canaanites.   But this young lad named Judah saw the "city lights" and decided to join the wantonness (unrestricted lust). Inc...
Genesis 37 February 6, 2018 Day 37 of our reading is in Genesis 37. What a sad story to read about today. The jealousy and envy of Joseph's brothers is nothing short of appalling. If we read on, we know that there is a very beautiful outcome to this story, but if we only look at this chapter from the current state of Joseph's brothers, we see this ...
Genesis 36 February 5, 2018 Day 36 of our reading is in Genesis 36. In this chapter, we learn about the generation of Esau and the kings of Edom (Esau). We know that in previous chapters, that Esau made a terrible decision which cost him his birthright and Jacob deceived Isaac and was rewarded the birthright. However, in this chapter, we read about...

What is it with the strange idols (images) the people had collected?

Jacob had to redirect everyone's attention once again to the One True God. It seems so foolish to have all these idols. Jacob said we are going to build an altar and remember how the Lord appeared to us, blessed us, guided us through many adversities. He is our God, not these trinkets you have picked up along the way.

Really, when you get down to it, it is not so hard to understand how we can get distracted from what is really most important. We see all around us people who get caught up in what kind of car they drive, how much money they make or their position in society. The inside label of their clothing or exclusive store they shop in becomes a preoccupation. An athletic event or recreation becomes preeminent in there mind over the great "feast God has prepared for them in the House of Prayer (altar)".

When you think about that way, these things become the trinkets (idols) that are so easy to collect. To realize (as Jacob reminded those with him) the trinkets of this world are not worth our worship. We know people in the world that have built there life entirely around these materialistic pursuits.

There is nothing like entering the House of God and laying it all on the altar. To lift up His Name and say in our hearts "it is you, Lord, you are most important, you are my God......I lay these trinkets on the altar for you are my healer, comforter and Savior, not these things."

Genesis 35 February 4, 2018 Day 35 of our reading is in Genesis 35. What a heartfelt moment it must have been for Isaac to see his son and all his grandchildren. This promise that has been talked about for years upon years is starting to reveal itself even more. Abraham was first given the promise ~205 years prior to Isaac's death. Keep in min...
Genesis 30 January 30, 2018 Day 30 of our reading is in Genesis 30. The Lord has certainly blessed Jacob! He was blessed with many sons and a daughter in this chapter and was blessed with a large amount of livestock.  No doubt, God had his hand in all these blessings but what is noteworthy is that Jacob worked for these things as well. We know...
Genesis 34 February 3, 2018 Day 34 of our reading is in Genesis 34. In this chapter, we read about the defilement (meaning rape/abuse) of Dinah and the retaliation. Lust, envy, and covetousness are powerful, terrible and fleshly traits that leads us to do despicable things. Shechem lusted for Dinah and coveted the wealth of Jacob. But... ...
Genesis 33 February 2, 2018 Day 33 of our reading is in Genesis 33. We have come to the moment that Jacob (Isreal) has been quite concerned about. Jacob and Esau meet and it couldn't have gone any better. When reading this chapter you can't help but feel like Esau was completely overwhelmed by this reunion. Esau "ran" to meet Jacob, "kissed hi...
