The Lord Is My Shepherd I Shall Not Want

The Lord Is My Shepherd I Shall Not Want

For centuries, the words of Psalm 23 have brought comfort and reassurance to millions of Christians around the world. This beloved passage reminds us that no matter where we go or what we face, we are never alone. It speaks of a deep and abiding relationship between Jesus and his followers, a relationship that is as enduring as it is meaningful. In this sermon, we'll take a closer look at Psalm 23 and explore what it can teach us about our walk with Jesus.

Key Verses

  • Ps 23

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."

This opening verse is a powerful declaration of trust and faith. It reminds us that just as a shepherd cares for his flock, Jesus cares for us. He provides for our needs, protects us from harm, and guides us along the path of righteousness. When we place our trust in him, we can rest assured that we lack nothing.

"He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul."

These verses describe a scene of rest and renewal, a place of calm and peace. They remind us that Jesus not only provides for our physical needs but also cares for our emotional and spiritual well-being. He invites us to slow down, to rest and savor the goodness of his provision. Here, we can find refreshment for our souls and the strength we need to face whatever lies ahead.

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

In this verse, the psalmist acknowledges that life is not always easy. There will be times of darkness and despair, times when we feel alone and afraid. But even in the valley of the shadow of death, Jesus is with us. His presence brings comfort and assurance that we are not alone. He guides us with his rod and staff, protecting us from harm and leading us back to the safety of his embrace.

"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

In these final verses, the psalmist speaks of a joyous celebration, a feast in the presence of our enemies. This is a picture of the abundant life that Jesus offers us, a life filled with joy and blessing. As we follow him, he pours out his blessings upon us, anointing us with his grace and overflowing our cups with his goodness. And as we walk with him, we can be confident that his mercy and goodness will follow us all the days of our lives.

Conclusion

Psalm 23 is a reminder that we are never alone on our journey through life. Jesus is our shepherd, our guide, and our friend. He leads us to green pastures and still waters, restores our souls when we are weary, and comforts us in times of trouble. As we walk with him, we can be confident that he will provide for our every need, protect us from harm, and lead us into the abundant life that he promises. So let us walk with him, trusting in his goodness and grace, and rejoicing in the knowledge that we dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

The Gospel Message

The Lord Jesus Christ is alive and well today, and able to do all things. All power is given Him, and through His name, we are forgiven, and through the shedding of His blood our sins are remitted, and that His Word stands as true today as it did 2000 years ago. Repentance of one's sins, water baptism in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and being baptized with the Holy Ghost is His divine specific plan of salvation.
